Many people do their own examination of the content of United Nations Resolution #2758, the Three Joint USA-PRC Communiques, and various statements of US Executive Branch officials to arrive at the conclusion that "the United States has fully recognized that Taiwan belongs to China."
However, such a conclusion is not supported by the facts. Here in the 21st century, multiple editions of the Congressional Research Service's report "Evolution of the One China Policy" have fully confirmed that the US government has never recognized the People's Republic of China (PRC) as having sovereignty over Taiwan. Furthermore, in the last few years, the US Congress' passing of many bills and resolutions regarding Taiwan would have been impossible if indeed the US government had somehow already agreed that Taiwan belongs to China. In summary, all statements to the effect that "the United States has fully recognized that Taiwan belongs to China" should be regarded as Chinese disinformation. |
