Oral Comments: Sir Winston Churchill, Prime Minister
Date: July 14, 1954
Subject: Chiang Kai-shek took refuge upon Formosa

The Prime Minister (Sir Winston Churchill) Chiang Kai-shek who, having for a very long time fought on our side, or on the American side, with American aid and support, was driven out of his country by a Communist revolution . . . . and who took refuge upon Formosa, where he still remains.

We are not going to raise this question of the entry of Communist China into the United Nations at present. We think that September is the first time that it can be raised, and we believe that it might be better for all concerned, and for all the interests represented, that it should be postponed until a later period.
